About
Georges Malkine was one of the original members of the 1920s French Surrealist artists. He left Paris after the war and settled in Woodstock the raise a family. He continued to paint until the late 1960s, one of his most active periods. He was the only visual artist named in Andre Breton's 1924 Surrealist Manifesto at the time of its publication; he says of Malkine: "He had a brilliant gift for expressing the ineffable." He experimented with many different styles from Surrealism to graphics, and felt the idea for the painting was the most important thing. Malkine was ultimately known for his expression, not so much for his style of painting.
