About
Told from the point of view of photographer and historian Gene Dauner, this short film chronicles the California Quarry in Woodstock, NY, one of the most important bluestone quarries in the region. Much of the stone that paved the sidewalks of New York City from the mid-nineteenth century to the early twentieth century came from this area. The beginning of this labor-intensive industry in the 1830s and '40s coincided with the famine in Ireland and subsequent mass migration, and as a result most of the quarry workers were Irish. To this day, countless miles of bluestone sidewalks are still in place around the Northeast..
